History in the Pub III: London Recorded Sound

A reminder if you haven’t spotted it on our Events page, that we have History in the Pub tomorrow evening, upstairs at the Bell in Spitalfields. If you came to either of our events last September and November, you’ll know what a great evening out it is: learning about London’s History after work over a pint, or whatever happens to be your favourite poison.

A bit of a departure from previously, this time we have a theme: London Recorded Sound. And we couldn’t have a better line-up of speakers: Ross Macfarlane from the Wellcome Library; Simon Rooks from the BBC; and Ian Rawes from the British Library. They will be presenting sound clips and slides. Matt Brown from Londonist will be our MC as usual and also provide testing questions for the Speed Quiz. Prizes for that and the Prize draws include: a year’s free membership to London Historians, worth £39; a signed copy of Dickens’s London by Peter Clark; and a signed copy of the new London in the Eighteenth Century by Prof Jerry White. Some of you may have seen Jerry’s talk at our first ever History in the Pub.

The Bell is in Middlesex Street, Spitalfields. Nearest stations are Aldgate or Liverpool Street. Doors open 18:30 for 19:30 start. We should be done by 21:30, though many like to hang around for further drinking and socialising downstairs.

Entry is free for London Historians members, £3 for non-members. We still have a few places available. If you’d like to come, please email us on a no obligation basis, so we can get an idea of numbers.
