Save the Velodrome
Herne Hill Velodrome – arguably London’s most historic surviving sports venue since the demolition of the original Wembley Stadium – is under threat of closure. Located on Burbage Road, the site has been dedicated to track cycling, with associated recreational uses, since 1891 and it was the venue for the cycling events of the 1948 Olympics.
Supporters of the amenity have mounted a very impressive publicity campaign, centred on a Facebook group.
Note the public meeting at Dulwich College tonight, folks.
Nice post. Good to see the FB group. Herne Hill has recently benefited from Southwark Council’s 2m GBP Olympic Legacy Fund. An immediate investment of 200k for track resurfacing seams the most likely. Source: Cycling Weekly, December 16, 2010
