Jubilee Promo: Old Money
Here you go. Next person to join LH (you can do it here) gets this 1954 farthing. Only the oldest of our readers will remember the cute little wren on the reverse.
Thereafter, we’ll dish out one of these ten sixpences dating between 1954 and 1966. Not much actual value, but they surely must be very lucky.
God Save The Queen!
I remember being very, very cross when I was a little girl, because of decimalisation. I got a sixpence from the tooth fairy and from a whole 6d suddenly it was only worth tuppence ha’penny. I still have all my tooth fairy sixpences; it hardly seemed worth spending them as they weren’t worth as much any more. We had an old farthing still knocking around the house, I always loved the wren on the back, I was glad nobody had spent the wren.
I not only remember farthings but also remember using them in the purchase of a loaf. (Doing myself no favours there, perhaps!)
I also remember silver threepenny bits but only as objects to be hidden in the Christmas pudding!
They had a box of threepenny bits too, but we were a bit short of time, so I just got the sixpences and the farthing. The wren must be one of the most inspired coin designs ever.
