The King’s Army Parade, 2012.
Today being the last Sunday in January, the English Civil War Society held its annual parade to commemorate the regicide of Charles I on 30 January 1649. Only the Royalist half participates; the Parliamentarians get their turn later in the year. Their task today was to serve as stewards in hi-visibility yellow bibs, and they did a great job, not intrusive or bossy at all, as one might expect from Puritans! Fiona and I took well over 250 pictures. Here is a selection. I’ll dump more on Flickr later along with some movie footage which I’ll put on YouTube.
It’s a pleasure to be able to write so little and just let the pictures do the talking. Such a fun and interesting parade to watch. Hearty congratulations to the ECWS for putting on such a superb show: hugely impressive.
I love the tiny girl in yellow!
It’s nice that the ECWS feature quite heavily non-combatants, ie women and children, there were many in the parade, under-represented in these pictures.
Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks Viv. Look forward to checking out you Parliamentarians next time!
Great photos – well done At least some people appreciate what we do. It really annoys me that we don’t get any coverage on the local TV news and very little, if any, in the national press- and yet, there was a HUGE event in Trafalgar Square for the Chinese New Year celebration that featured all over the place last night and this morning! Enough of the beef – WE had a great time taking part in the event – it is a privilage to serve the King and commemorate such a turning point in history.

Thanks, Kevin. I quite agree. This parade commemorates one of the defining moments in our history, right up there with Hastings, Magna Carta etc. What’s more, it’s TV gold in my opinion – their loss. But you can count on us always to publicise as best we can in our small way. I have mixed feelings about it becoming hugely popular – I really enjoyed the freedom of movement! Swings and roundabouts, eh.
Some very nice photographs, particularly the one of me. I look forward to see the rest as well as the video when they are all uploaded. SS.
@Viz – that tiny girl could be a boy dressed in skirts as was the practice at the time.
Excellent photographs though – we appreciate them.
